Four explosions ripped through Baghdad during Friday prayers and killed at least 27 people and injured dozens, officials said, on the eve of Shiite Islam''s most important holiday. The first blast occurred in Baghdad''s southern Dora neighbourhood near the al-Khadimain mosque and reportedly killed at least 15, according police. A second blast, caused by a suicide bomber, occurred outside the Ali Al Bayaa mosque in a predominantly Shiite neighbourhood of western Baghdad. The injured were taken to Baghdad''s al Yarmuk hospital, where a doctor said at least one person was killed and four were injured. Witnesses said the third explosion happened after a rocket hit a coffee shop in the Shiite Shulah district, killing two. Other reports suggested the third explosion happened near an Ashoura procession in the Shulah district, and that two people were killed and five injured. The fourth attack was on a checkpoint in the northern Baghdad neighbourhood of Adamiyah. At least one police officer was killed an two civilians wounded. The deadly explosions came as Iraq partially sealed its land borders as part of stepped up security on the eve of Ashoura. Iraq''s fledgling government had hoped to avert the bloodshed that marred Ashoura last year, when twin blasts ripped through crowds of worshippers at Shiite Muslim shrines in Baghdad and Karbala and killed at least 181 people.
