This topic is one that is difficult to navigate, but that’s exactly why I wanted to bring it up! In healthcare, we should constantly be considering risk to benefit when providing recommendations for patients and families. Sometimes it’s easy because the benefits significantly outweigh any potential risks. Or it’s easy because the risks significantly outweigh any potential benefits. But sometimes it isn’t as clear. Maybe there isn’t much research on the topic or the results reported have been mixed. Or one thing I hear often (esp on social media) is that a treatment is low risk for physical harm so why not try it… to which I would argue that wasted time, money, resources, and false hope are still significant risks, but I digress.. This is why informed consent is so important. Our job is not to decide on every treatment and recommendation that a family should implement, but rather provide them with the evidence to support risks and/or benefits and our clinical insights so they can make a well informed decision. It’s so important to be overly clear and transparent with patients and families to help them navigate making treatment recommendation decisions. This is how we ensure we are providing collaborative, individualized, evidence based, informed care. #OralMotorExam #OME #UnpopularOpinion #Pediatrics #FunctionalExam #FocusonFunction #Treatment #Evaluation #OngoingAssessment #Assessment #SLP #SpeechLanguagePathologist #speechpathologist Check out my website (https://pediatricfeedingslp.com) and Instagram ( / c_wsdpzxwsd ) for more info!
