The intercostal nerves are the nerves that run between the ribs, and they provide sensation to the skin and muscles of the chest wall. Specifically, the anterior cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves supply the skin overlying the front of the chest wall, including the breastbone (sternum) and the area between the ribs (intercostal spaces). The number of intercostal nerves supplying the chest wall varies between individuals, but typically there are six to eight intercostal nerves that supply the area. The innervation pattern of the anterior chest wall follows a dermatome distribution, which means that each intercostal nerve supplies a specific area of skin. The dermatomes for the chest wall start from the midline of the body and extend laterally towards the sides. The dermatome distribution of the anterior chest wall is as follows: T2: This dermatome covers the skin over the superior aspect of the breast and extends to the medial aspect of the upper arm. T3: This dermatome covers the skin over the nipple and extends to the medial aspect of the upper arm. T4: This dermatome covers the skin over the lower aspect of the breast and extends to the lateral aspect of the upper arm. T5: This dermatome covers the skin over the mid-axillary line and extends to the lateral aspect of the upper arm. T6: This dermatome covers the skin over the lower costal margin and extends to the lateral aspect of the upper leg. T7: This dermatome covers the skin over the xiphoid process and extends to the lateral aspect of the upper leg.
