For a long time, Sam Sing was the UPS driver who delivered cigar shipments to a number of Pittsburgh area shops, often sticking around at Leaf & Bean in the Strip District for breaks. Then, in 2012, after hearing so many people tell him he should just go ahead and open his own shop, he took the plunge and opened Cigar Den in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood (first making sure that his friend Jim Robinson was cool with the distance from Leaf & Bean). Sam’s goal has been to offer customers a club-level experience without the club-level cost. He’s taken a two-story building in a mostly residential area and repurposed each room. At the ground level, there are some comfortable chairs, a walk-in humidor built from wood that Sam sourced from the neighborhood, a small kitchen and a patio with a grill that customers are welcome to use (though you’re encouraged to share the grub). Upstairs, there are two rooms. One’s set up for cards, dominoes, or just meeting at a table. The other is set up for more quiet, comfortable lounging. Not subscribed to Cigar Snob Magazine?
