Jalessah T. Jackson will join the show to discuss distinctions between imperial feminism and decolonial feminism. We'll talk about why Safiya Bukhari is such a critical example for the Decolonial Feminist Collective's political education, and we'll discuss Bukhari's role in the development of the political prisoner movement in the US. We'll also talk about Kamala Harris, and imperial feminisms, highlighting why a decolonial approach is necessary. And we'll also discuss different ways to engage the fight for reproductive justice, without falling into the trap of imperial feminisms. Jalessah T. Jackson is an antidisciplinary cultural worker, political educator, and reproductive justice practitioner based in Atlanta, GA. In April 2020, they founded the Decolonial Feminist Collective (DFC), a political project utilizing decolonial/Black feminist frameworks in political education, mutual aid, and international solidarity-building. They have held adjunct appointments at Kennesaw State University, Morehouse College, and CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, teaching courses in Black Studies, Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies, and Public Health. As a community-based educator, Jalessah has developed and facilitated numerous workshops, trainings, and educational initiatives that equip individuals with the knowledge and tools to advocate for themselves and their communities. Committed to the fullest development of oppressed peoples’ collective power and self determination, their work inside the classroom and beyond exemplifies the interrelationship between study and struggle.
