Pinterest Plan Link: https://pin.it/6hvjkiY45 One board, one tree. Multiple patterns. Its the tree that keeps on giving! This beauty will add that rustic decor item you have been missing, both inside and out. Free printable plans available in the description below. You can use either a cedar fence picket or a 6' 1 x 6 if you want your tree to have a little class. To start, we are ripping our board down to 1" thick, this will give us 5 stripes. with those 5 stripes, we are cutting 5 pieces, to 11inches. 5 to 10 inches, 5 to 9 inches, guess what, 5 to 8 inches, 5 to 7 inches, 5 to 6 inches. only 3 to 5 inches, just kidding, we need 5 at 5 inches. 5 to 4 inches and 5 to 3 inches. Todays video is sponsored by the number five. When you see a friend, you dont give them a high six, you give them a high five. Whats the message here? With all the pieces layed out in front of you, its time to mark the holes for your dowel rod. I make them close to center, and find center for the top and bottom pieces. then, using a random board I score a line over the top. heavy enough to be seen, but light enough to easily sand off. since I have a 5/8" dowel rod, I am using a matching forcsner bit in my drill press. you can use a hand drill as well. the holes do not need to be perfectly centered since we are chopping the ends off once assembled. at the drill press, I drill my first hole, keeping it centered. then, I use a piece of scrap as a fence so I elemi ate one of the axis directions. now I can align the forscner bit pilot with my mark from the front. if you are using a regular twist drill bit, you can make a mark on the table to use as a guide. drill the holes, and stay hydrated. seems like this took forever.. I cut my dowel rod to 3 foot long, to astetically make the tree pleasing to the eyes, and to keep its center of gravity closer to the ground. feed each of the pieces onto the dowel. for some reason I am really jonesin for kabobs. some steak, mushrooms, onion, green pepper.. after all the pieces have been skewered, I take a leftover board, and drill the 5/8" hole in it, then, cut it to be square on the miter saw. drilling the hole first keeps my hand toes safe. this piece is the topper. fire in a nail on each side to secure it in place. place the tree back on the workbench, and gently snug up the pieces, and nail the bottom board in place. remember that the boards need a little room so you can move them, but you dont want them to spin around from a strong wind gust. where your 10 inch meets the 9 inch and so on, line a board up and draw a line to the top. this will be the angles for the sides. you can use a bandsaw, or jigsaw. i am using my circular saw, so let me show you how that is done. my blade is 1-1/2" from the fence, so I measure in an additional 1-1/2" then, I place my tree ontop of a piece or insulation foam, and place a board large enough than I can kneel onto it onto the newly drawn line. set the blade depth so it just kisses into the foam, and dont hit any main arteries. do this for both sides. take the last long piece, and create two equal pieces. find the center of them and drill out for the dowel. they we overlap, like so. i also cut two pieces to be about two inches long for the top bracing to add stability. i line the bottom board up to be in line with the other nailed boards but laying it on the workbench. then, rotate the second board to be perpendicular and fire in a few more nails. ohh spiral tree, ohhh spiral tree...you fill my heart with music. there are wayyy too many versions of that song.. SUBSCRIBE. Thanks, and happy building!!
