Ever tried Grenache wine before, either as a 100% single varietal or in a GSM Blend? If not, you're in for a real treat, because it can be one of the best value wines most people overlook because they are too focused on the "popular grapes" like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. If you like Merlot or Zinfandel, you'll love Grenache, or Garnacha as it's called in Spain, especially Old Vine Garnacha from the Priorat Region. While Grenache is primarily a red wine, it can be made into a Grenache Rose, and there is a white grape in the Southern Rhone Valley wine region of France called Grenache Noir. The Southern Rhone Valley is home to GSM Blends- Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre, wines, and Chateauneuf du Pape is the highest quality expression of it, led by the 100% grenache super star, Chateau Rayas. But good grenache may also be found in Gigondas (like Chateau St. Cosme), Vacqueyras, and the entire Cotes du Rhone (CDR) wine region. Grenache is definitely one of the great French wines, and it is made into VDN (Vin Doux Naturel) France's answer to Port Wine. French wine regions like Banyuls, Rivesaltes, and Maury are renowned for their VDN. Great grenache may be found in California as well, especially in Pasos Robles, and Santa Barbara, with the very expensive Sine Qua Non.
