Behind the scenes of an animation showing a coronation of German kings and Holy Roman Emperors during the Early Modern Age. Short loopable animation: • Coronation | Short Animation (loopable) | 4K Full Breakdown: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/x3... ▬ Historical Background ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Throughout the medieval period of the Holy Roman Empire, multiple coronations were held. First, the most prominent German lords, and later the electoral princes, would elect the future king. The king-elect would typically travel to Aachen to be crowned King of Germany (officially styled King of the Romans ) by the Archbishop of Cologne, as Aachen fell under his jurisdiction. Afterward, the newly crowned king would often prepare for a journey to Northern Italy to be crowned King of Italy (or King of the Lombards ), usually in Pavia by the Archbishop of Milan. If possible, he would also travel to the Kingdom of Burgundy/Arles to be crowned there by the Archbishop of Besançon, though this was less common, as the title King of the Romans often implied rule over Burgundy. Finally, the king would seek the Papacy’s approval in Rome to be crowned Emperor of the Romans , completing his elevation to Holy Roman Emperor and, by extension, secular head of Christendom. This title, the most prestigious in Catholic Europe, gave the pope—who was not a vassal of the emperor—significant influence in imperial politics. After 1508, a single coronation sufficed, as papal coronation was no longer necessary. Upon his predecessor's death, the newly elected German king styled himself Emperor-elect by the votes of the electoral princes. To emphasize the growing importance of the German princes, the three ecclesiastical electors— the Archbishops of Mainz, Trier, and Cologne —participated in the coronation, each simultaneously holding the crown before placing it on the emperor's head. This ritual continued until the last Holy Roman Emperor was crowned in 1792. ▬ Project ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Model was done using both 3ds Max and Zbrush.
