Are You a Friend or Brother? | Devotional | Proverbs

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. — Proverbs 17:17 This is an easy verse to misread. Some assume a contrast and read this verse this way: "A friend loves at all times, but a brother is born for adversity."  But there is no "but" in this verse. The best Hebrew translation would include the conjunction "and." And when you emphasize this conjunction, the nouns "friend" and "brother" take on a new level of meaning. In other words, a "friend" is one level of a relationship we have with another man, but a "brother" is a level up. It's someone who is there for us during adversity. It's someone who will hang with us during those hard times. And fellas, we need friends, but we also need brothers. Brothers who will stand by our side when we face adverse moments. Men who will wrestle, not with us, but for us through the challenges we face. These men are more than friends. That's why we call them "brothers." And gentlemen, if you don't have a brother, then you better get one. Because adversity is coming. And friends are nice, but brothers are way better when we face adversity!
