Piazzale Michelangelo was built on the hill south of Florence's historic centre, designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi. Florence was the capital of Italy during this period. In 1869, the entire city underwent extensive urban renewal, with the creation of the Lungarni (riverside promenades). On the right, in place of the 14th-century walls, is the avenue, and to the left is an 8km tree-lined panoramic road, currently called Viale dei Colli, which leads to Piazzale Michelangelo, a panoramic terrace overlooking the city. From 1890 to 1935, this road served as the Chianti tramway, connecting Florence with Greve in Chianti and San Casciano Val di Pesa. In 1873, a copy of Michelangelo's David was brought to the square with the help of nine pairs of oxen. This monument occupies a privileged position, overlooking the city from above like a watchful guard over all the beauty Florence has to offer. This square was dedicated to the great Renaissance artist Michelangelo, and the copy of David was placed in the centre of the square next to the four allegories of the Medici Chapels of San Lorenzo. Poggi also designed the neoclassical loggia as a museum for Michelangelo's works, but this museum was never built and currently houses a panoramic restaurant.
