Globalization's Effect on Families

A family can be defined as a sexually expressive kin relationship in which people commit to maintaining the well being of their group over time (Lamanna and Riedman 9). However, with the rise of globalization and its spare-no-one mentality, the question is what happens when the group becomes dismembered and reunited only to be fractured again. And even more puzzling is the question of who is in that group? More often than not, with the rise of international adoptions and internet companionship sites, the group to which one belongs holds more internal and situational similarities than ethnic and geographic ones. Furthermore, the rising popularity of distance technologies, such as email and Skype, has pushed families to maintain their group to a new extreme. As legal practices and social constructs race to keep up with the ever changing definition of a family, globalization kicks that race into turbo charge, revolutionizing the idea that while blood may be thicker than water, fiber optic cables may be the DNA of the new globalized world. Globalization is now enabling technologies to bring families together differently than ever before through both international adoption and internet dating. For this exploration, our starting point was the connection of two individuals and how globalization has affected this connection. Individuals seeking companionship are the driving force behind the new internet dating craze. Our sources reveal that internet dating and marriage pose a new ease for meeting people who, without globalization, would have never met. Next it is crucial to consider not only how a family is grounded, but how that family grows. International adoption, while it does pose more barriers than local adoption, accounted for about 17, 438 adoptions in 2008.(Globalization101.org) Celebrities adoption of international children has also made adopting oversees children highly glamorized. None of these family connections would be possible without technology. Innovations including Skype and international phone plans have taken one half a globe away and put him or her in the next room.
