The Red Cross response to the Kumamoto earthquake

The footage shows the devastation caused by the two powerful earthquakes that struck Kumamoto prefecture in Japan on 14 and 16 April, killing 67 people and displacing almost 200,000. 75,000 houses are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed by the earthquakes. The footage also shows people sleeping outside and people standing in the street outside their houses during powerful aftershocks and many other scenes from the first aftermath of the disaster. The footage shows the emergency medical activities in Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital, particularly in the first days after the earthquake, including injured people being attended to by the Red Cross medical staff. The Kumamoto Red Cross hospital was the main provider of medical assistance after the earthquake, and JRCS mobile medical teams provided medical assistance in evacuation centres and other locations in the affected area. Today, more than a month later, close to 10,000 people are still living in evacuation centres in the prefecture. The footage shows the evacuees in the evacuation centre in Mashiki town. Many of the evacuees are elderly people who have lost their homes and now depend on aid from the Japanese Red Cross Society and other relief providers. The footage shows distribution of relief goods by the Japanese Red Cross Society in the evacuation centre. The footage also shows Red Cross staff providing medical care to the evacuees inside an emergency relief station that was established by the Japanese Red Cross in this evacuation centre. The footage shows Red Cross staff providing psychosocial care to disaster victims. This is part of the special emphasis on this type of assistance by the Japanese Red Cross Society. Psychosocial support is badly needed among the affected people who often are traumatised by their experience. Many earthquake victims have lost everything they owned and worry about their uncertain future.
