More than 100 officers were stationed outside Victoria Park and nearby areas, with barriers set on East Point Road to prevent cars from entering the area where candlelight vigils to commemorate the victims of the June 4, 1989, protests in Beijing had been held over the years. The annual candlelight vigil in Victoria Park had been the only large-scale commemoration of the crackdown on Chinese soil for the past three decades. But the event was banned in 2020 on public health grounds during the Covid-19 pandemic. Vigil organiser the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China disbanded in 2021 in light of the national security law imposed by Beijing the previous year. No opposition groups have submitted applications to hold events related to the anniversary since the alliance’s disbandment, with pro-establishment groups holding carnivals in the park during the period running through the anniversary. A government-backed “Hometown Market” was held in the park this year, with around 300 booths from various clansmen associations.
