Genetic Test Stewardship: Perspective on Evidence, Coding and Quality

Availability and accessibility of genetic tests has grown rapidly, along with public awareness and a promise of precision-medicine. Genetic counselors play a critical role in guiding medically appropriate genetic test orders. Genetic test stewardship can reduce errors, improve patient care, reduce costs, and lay an important foundation of trust between patients, providers, institutions and insurers. Rapid evolution of assays, expansion of genetic tests into multiple medical specialties, direct consumer access, combined with a focus on precision-medicine initiatives foretell a future where genetic test stewardship programs are essential to supporting quality patient care. This presentation will highlight the role of genetic counselors in laboratory stewardship programs and the necessity of this expertise in addressing evolving complexities in coding, reimbursement and genetic test quality. After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the role of genetic counselors in test stewardship. 2.
