Written by Samsa (Swami Venkatadri Iyer) Radio Adaptation & Direction: Parvathavani Assisted by- B Gangappa Presented by the artists of "Nam Company Kalavidaru" About the Author: Samsa was one of the most powerful Kannada playwrights of the early twentieth century India. Within a span of twenty years (1919 — 1939) he wrote twenty-three plays. Only six are available now among which, Vigada Vikrama Raaya, Bettada Arasu and Birudentembara Ganda are the popular ones. His plays are historical and capture the nuances of power and politics, loyalty, treachery and conspiracy. They celebrate the power and grandeur of the Mysore kingdom. Samsa’s plays were written when the movement for freedom in colonial India was gaining strength and popularity. Literatures of this period try to construct “Indian identity” either by critiquing the so-called ‘western’ or by reinventing the past. Samsa’s plays come under the second category.
