Merchants Square Mall: The End of an Era

Built in 1941 as part of a Mack Truck plant, "Merchants Square Mall" had a life in the 21st century as an "alternative to traditional malls" which basically means "indoor flea market". It's not a "mall" as we know it, with no anchors or national retailers, but was a 2-story wooden venue with an auction house, community center, massive model train exhibit, and one-off vendors. As of March 2023, all tenants need to be out as the property enters its next phase of life: demolition, followed by the construction of yet another massive warehouse in the Lehigh Valley. The plot of land is adjacent to the Norfolk Southern rail line at 1901 S. 12th Street in the southside of Allentown, PA. Nearby is another mall on borrowed time, South Mall. Perhaps vendors at Merchants Square could move into the half vacant South Mall, although unless that place offers good deals on renting out space, they could miss out on a local opportunity.
