This video which was taken on the 20th of June 2015 shows one of the many illegal moorings at Studland Bay in Dorset. This mooring used an old chain that had sunk into the sand and by attaching a riser to it, it is now being dragged across the seagrass, basically cutting it down and destroying this legally protected habitat. In the bay there are about 52 illegal moorings (approximately)which have no permission to be there and are not maintained or insured and yet the installation of Environmentally Friendly Moorings (Which will be maintained and insured) is being stopped by a very small handful of boat owners. It should be asked what is better to moor a boat to, a maintained and insured mooring which does not harm the environment or one that is not maintained or insured and could break whilst the boat is attached, running the risk of damage to people, the environment and the boat !!! Luckily most responsible boat owners (and there are a lot of them now;(, about 80% of the people we talk to) DO WANT EFM's and so the tide of change is turning against the antis and so Studland Bay will become protected in the next few years with your help. These responsible boat owners can see what is happening to this beautiful bay which was the most important site for Spiny Seahorses in the UK if not Europe and they have been allowed to disappear by inaction, despite being a protected species (put forward by The Seahorse Trust) since the 6th of April 2008.
