The Most Beautiful Places in the World: “Gulf of Fonseca” The Gulf of Fonseca part of the Pacific Ocean, is a gulf in Central America, bordering El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Gulf of Fonseca, Spanish Golfo de Fonseca, sheltered inlet of the Pacific Ocean, was discovered for Europeans in 1522 by Gil González de Ávila, and named by him after his patron, Archbishop Juan Fonseca, the implacable enemy of Columbus Gulf’s entrance, marked by Cape Amapala in El Salvador and Cape Cosigüina in Nicaragua, is about 20 miles (32 km) across, but widens to approximately 50 miles (80 km). In entrance in the Gulf there is series of rocky volcanic islands which according locals are monumental lava bombs from cataclysmic Cosigüina Volcano eruption in 1835 which was the biggest volcanic eruption in Central America in human history. While sailing across the strait between Nicaragua and El Salvador it was obvious that islands of size big enough to accommodate military base could hardly be erupted from volcano eruption – even as large as Cosigüina’s 1835. Since islands are in line of volcanoes parallel with Cocos Plate boundary which subducting under Central America Caribbean Continental Plate, it is probable that islands are remnants of volcano in the middle of the Gulf of Fonseca which was gradually eroded. Whatever the true geological explanation is – sailing across the Gulf and around the islands with Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras background was one of the greatest panoramic views of my “Expedition Nicaragua 2018”.
