When Research Goes on Trial In criminal trials, when research is first presented in the courtroom, it goes on trial. In her closing plenary lecture, Prof Dame Sue Black captivated the audience with her courtroom experiences as an expert witness in forensic science, and emphasised the importance of communicating the science well to members of the jury who most likely have no background in science. She also closely examined the hurdles that novel research must overcome before it can be accepted as evidence provided by an expert witness to the court. Dame Sue shared, "The importance of the opinion should be based on facts that are as verifiable, as accurate and as repeatable as possible. Fundamentally, we're always going to go back to subjective opinion but based on data. We must be able to trust the data."
