Welcome to this week’s fastest minute in construction. I’m Nate Beck, Daily Reporter staff writer. Sponsored by Con Cor Company. Let’s dig into the news. It’s official: Brownsville-based Michels Corp. will perform a quarter of a billion dollars in road work as the lead contractor on a project to rebuild Interstate 94. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation on Thursday announced that Michels won an $80 million contract to rebuild a four-and-a-half mile stretch of I-94. The company also won a $168.8 million job to rework the southern portion of the 18-mile project. WisDOT has laid out an aggressive timetable to complete the I-94 project. The agency wants to have the whole thing done by Memorial Day of 2020. Here’s one pretty big reason WisDOT is in such a rush: Construction of Foxconn’s massive factory near the highway has just begun. ------------------- Also this week, it was moving day for Janesville construction manager JP Cullen. 75 of the company’s employees are moving from brookfield to a new office in downtown Milwaukee. The company is leasing a space in the Milwaukee Fortress Building, which is undergoing a renovation led by Madison’s Alexander & Co. The project creates office space and apartments set for completion later this year in the historic building. And guess who was the general contractor for that overhaul? Yep, it was JP Cullen. ---- Lastly, the stampede for the democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor got a little quieter on Thursday. Milwaukee businessman Andy Gronik announced he was dropping out of the race. That leaves nine other democrats running in an August primary to unseat Gov. Scott Walker. Gronik’s decision comes after a Marquette Law School poll this week showed single-digit support for him to carry his party’s torch. But while state superintendent Tony Evers attracted the most support in the poll, 60 percent of respondents said they did not have enough information to form an opinion. That’s been this week’s punch list. We’ll see you next week.
