Ritchie Blackmore is one of the most influential guitarists in rock history — and Smoke on the Water isn't even in his top 3. This is my ranking of his 10 greatest Deep Purple studio solos. From 1968 to 1993, Blackmore blended neoclassical precision with blues-rock aggression to create some of the most iconic guitar solos ever recorded. But which ones stand above the rest? Studio versions only — no live recordings, no Made in Japan. Just the definitive takes that made it to vinyl. 🎸 THE RANKING: 0:00 - Introduction 0:37 - #10: Bad Attitude (The House of Blue Light, 1987) 1:35 - #9: Wasted Sunsets (The House of Blue Light, 1987) 2:04 - #8: Hard Lovin' Man (Deep Purple in Rock, 1970) 3:04 - #7: Strange Kind of Woman (Fireball, 1971) 4:15 - #6: Lazy (Machine Head, 1972) 5:18 - #5: Mistreated (Burn, 1974) 5:59 - #4: Smoke on the Water (Machine Head, 1972) 7:00 - #3: Child in Time (Deep Purple in Rock, 1970) 8:20 - #2: Burn (Burn, 1974) 9:06 - #1: Highway Star (Machine Head, 1972) 🎧 Listen to all 10 solos in order: • Ritchie Blackmore's 10 GREATEST Deep Purpl... Ritchie Blackmore's approach to soloing was unlike anyone else in hard rock. He brought a classical discipline — Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi — to a genre built on blues improvisation, and the tension between those two instincts is what makes his best solos so compelling. The "Highway Star" solo is essentially a Baroque composition played through a cranked Marshall. The "Mistreated" solo is pure blues devastation. "Child in Time" builds from nothing to one of the most explosive climaxes in rock guitar. The range across these 10 picks is enormous. A couple of surprises on this list: two solos from The House of Blue Light, an album most fans dismiss as the weakest reunion record. And "Strange Kind of Woman" — a non-album single that contains one of Blackmore's most melodic and underappreciated performances. This is Part 1 in my series ranking the greatest solos by every Deep Purple member: Part 2: Jon Lord's 10 Greatest Solos — out now Coming soon: Tommy Bolin, Steve Morse, Don Airey, and Ian Paice Drop your own Blackmore top 10 in the comments.
