The number of international students tripled in the last decade, from 285,890 in 2011 to 622,000 in 2021. Only about one-fifth (19%) of international students who entered Canada with a study permit between 1990 and 2014 obtained permanent status within ten years of receiving their study permits (Akbar, 2022). In this short video, I feature three (3) individuals in different stages of their status as international students (or post-international student), replicating the 3 groups representing the 3 stages of temporary migration and transition process in Akbar’s (2022) research project. Despite the geographical difference, the 3 individuals living in British Columbia share many similarities and outlook in their lived experiences with the international students interviewed in Akbar’s research. Research project featured in video: https://www.torontomu.ca/cerc-migration/re... Created under Toronto Metropolitan University’s CERC in Migration and Integration, “Migration Narrative Challenge” (Learn more here: https://www.torontomu.ca/cerc-migration/op...) – Produced & edited: ienelle delos reyes Special thanks to: Gwen, Sam, Neljean, Richenda, Eileen, and Milo for their participation and support throughout this project Many thanks to the TMU CERC team as well for putting on this challenge and giving me the opportunity to showcase my skills and advocacy work!
