Short interview with dr. Caroline Whyatt of Queens University Belfast at the Parkinson's UK 2012 research conference in York. She is talking about using the Nintendo Wii balance board for monitoring and the use of balance games for therapy (improve balance control). Results of this study involving 19 people with PD playing Nintendo over the course of 8 weeks show significant improvements in balance both static and dynamic and had lasting effects reflected in everyday activities. Interviews assessing subjective benefits point to higthened confidence and mood as a result of game training. Games could prove to be the 21 century's innovative tool to fight apathy and motivate people with Parkinson's to excercise. The National Institute of Conductive Education in Birmingham also gives Wii sessions specifically to PD patients with great success. http://www.cannonhillhouse.org.uk/ This line of research and developments would be worthy of more funding in my view.
