1937. Short footage of Field Marshal Douglas MacArthur (retired U.S. Army General) and his Chief of Staff, Lieutenant Colonel Dwight Eisenhower during their time working for the government of the Philippines. Credit: The March of Time via Getty Images. Notes: During World War II, Eisenhower would rise to become the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, while MacArthur, who resumed active duty with the U.S. Army, would become Commander of the Southwest Pacific Theatre and after the war, the military governor of Japan. Eisenhower later became the 34th President of the United States. Both men had a long working relationship with MacArthur serving as the superior officer. Eisenhower had served as MacArthur's aide during the 1932 operation which troops under MacArthur's command ousted the "Bonus Army" from its Anacostia Flats camp. MacArthur was a General and the Army Chief of Staff, while Eisenhower was a Major. Eisenhower was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on July 1st 1936 and remained at that rank while serving under MacArthur as assistant military advisor to the Philippine Government. 'The two men were public admirers, private enemies. MacArthur described Ike as the apotheosis of mediocrity, the best clerk he ever had. Ike told his diary MacArthur was a big baby who liked "boot lickers" and would probably be ruined by his love of the "limelight".' Text from Harold Evans' "The American Century".
