The most ingenious escape in history using a wooden vaulting horse. Escaping from Stalag Luft III had so far been impossible. Built on sandy soil, with distinctly coloured subsoil making disposal of tunnelling debris extremely difficult to disguise, the camp buildings were constructed on pilings, with guard dogs patrolling the compound after dark. In 1943, British officers at Stalag Luft III devised a plan to escape by digging a tunnel concealed beneath a vaulting horse used for daily exercise. The idea was to place the wooden vaulting horse closer to the prison fence to reduce the distance needed to dig an escape tunnel under the fence. The wooden vaulting horse was constructed from Red Cross wooden crates. When the escape took place all three POW Officers Oliver Philpot , Eric Williams and Michael Codner managed to reach neutral Sweden and were the flown home to England. Post war Eric Williams wrote the book Wooden Horse which in 1950 was made into a film. / @gullperchhistoricalarchives
