In today’s Sundwall trial analysis, I break down the testimony of Casey Tanner, the ex-husband of the decedent, and explain why he may have been a better witness for the prosecution than he first appeared. His memory was shaky, parts of his testimony were unintentionally funny, and yet he came across as calm, candid, and relatable — which can matter a great deal with a jury. This video looks at how witness preparation affects testimony, why an imperfect witness can still help the state, and how Tanner’s statements about the decedent’s alleged cancer claims, future plans, and lack of suicidal ideation fit into the prosecution’s theory of murder versus the defense theory of suicide. I also go through the cross-examination, including the defense effort to show manipulation, dishonesty, and family conflict, and point out the moments where the witness resisted the defense attorney and the moments where the defense did manage to get helpful points into the record. If you’re following the Sundal trial, this video focuses on: Casey Tanner’s direct examination why juries often like flawed but authentic witnesses the prosecution’s effort to rebut suicide the defense manipulation theory cross-examination strategy and witness control how demeanor can matter as much as memory in a criminal trial This channel covers criminal trials, witness credibility, courtroom strategy, cross-examination, objections, and jury persuasion from the perspective of a retired Missouri appellate attorney. #SundalTrial #TrialAnalysis #CourtroomAnalysis #WitnessCredibility #CrossExamination #TrueCrimeTrial #UtahTrial #MurderTrial #JuryAnalysis #TonyDeWitt 0:0 Introduction 0:36 15-second recap 0:54 Lets Start with the Text Messages 2:11 Unintentionally Funny 4:05 Serial Monogamy 6:04 Making the Jury Laugh 7:11 The Calm, Relatable Witness 8:25 He Didn’t Believe the Cancer Story 11:10 The Most Important Question 11:51 Cross Examination Begins 12:51 The Witness is Going to Fight Him 14:29 The Manipulation Angle 16:04 He Almost Got Caught 16:47 She Hated Her Family 18:11 Time to Quit 19:27 Outro
