Should Bike Shops Service E-Bikes? (From a Shop Owner’s Perspective) In this video, I dive into one of the toughest questions for bike shop owners: should you service e-bikes and scooters? I break down the hidden costs, risks, and realities of taking on electric mobility repairs, while also sharing insights for e-bike owners who wonder why service is expensive or hard to find. Key Topics Covered: -Tool & Equipment Costs Heavy e-bikes require specialized $3,000–$6,000 lifts and multiple bleed kits for proprietary brake systems. -Training & Staffing Challenges Techs need electrical knowledge, multimeter skills, and standardized procedures—which are difficult to replicate or pass down. -Margins & Supply Chain Problems Unlike traditional bikes, there’s no wholesale parts pipeline for throttles, controllers, or harnesses in the U.S., making parts markup nearly impossible. -Profitability Struggles Custom controller jobs often take 30+ hours and lose money. Basic services like flat tires on fat-tire e-bikes still cost $90+ due to the tools and labor involved. -Consumer Risks DIY repairs often destroy wiring, controllers, or motors, turning a $30 tube change into a $750 repair. -Where I Draw the Line No batteries (insurance liability), no e-motos or Sur-Rons (too heavy for lifts), and no scooters with oversized tubeless tires that take hours to mount. -The Big Picture E-mobility now makes up 56% of my revenue—without it, my shop might not have survived 2025. But it’s still not consistently profitable, and scaling operations is tricky. I’ll be making final decisions in 2026 on what services to keep, what to cut, and how to balance bike, e-bike, and scooter repair in a way that actually works for both shop owners and riders. 👉 Inspired by Matthew Fox’s Bootstrap Bike Shop channel. 👉 Share your thoughts: should small shops go “all in” on e-bike service, or is it a trap?Join this channel to get access to perks: / @gograva Find us at https://gograva.com
