From Kalemegdan, one can see all of Belgrade and far beyond. This is just one of the reasons why the Vinca people settled here 7000 years ago and why so many others have been fighting over this land ever since. Kalemegdan is the historic heart of Belgrade, and it belonged at different points in history to the Celts, Thracians, Romans, Turks, Slavs, Hungarians, Austrians, and Serbs. It's name means “fortress field”, which is a testament to the many battles that were fought here over several millenia. In fact, most parts of the fortress itself were destroyed and reconstructed several times, each time taking on a different architectural style depending on who was in power at the time. Under Austrian rule in 1867, Kalemegdan was gradually turned from a military establishment into a public park. Today, it is Belgrade's most beautiful and lively public space – a place to meet friends, go for a walk, rest in the shade, drink coffee, eat lunch, talk with local artists, explore history, or simply take in the view.
