Shenandoah is an American traditional folk song from the early 1800's. The song is widely believed to have originated from American voyageurs, and early versions of the lyrics describe a trader who fell in love with the daughter of Oneida chief Shenandoah. This particular arrangement was created by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett and recorded during a time when he was struggling with chronic fatigue syndrome. It is a beautiful and intimate arrangement that resonated with me, and I felt that the marimba could really capture the mood of this piece. Between myself, the instrument, and the various people who encountered this song throughout history, Shenandoah is a song that represents to me the complex racial dynamics of the American people in the last several hundred years. This performance is dedicated to the people who are struggling with COVID-19 and the fight for racial equity in the US. Video and audio by Tyler Deans Recorded on July 7, 2020
