Where is the watershed area of the colon located?

A description is provided of the blood supply of the large intestine with an account of the branches of the superior mesenteric and inferior mesenteric arteries involved. The superior mesenteric artery is the artery of the midgut; hence, it supplies the colon down to the proximal two-thirds of the transverse colon just proximal to the splenic flexure. The inferior mesenteric artery, the artery of the hindgut, takes over from the distal third of the transverse down to the upper part of the anal canal. Branches of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries anastomose with each other and form what we called a marginal artery, which is a continuous anastomotic arcade along the mesenteric border of the large intestine. This anastomosis is important because it provides collateral circulation. The weakest link in this marginal artery is near the left colic flexure which is between the middle colic and left colic branches. This is what we call a watershed area. This watershed area is a medical term referring to regions of the body that received a dual blood supply from the distal branches of two large arteries.
