is it time for spine surgery Dr Arun L Naik Neurosurgeon India Bangalore Back pain neck pain are the commonest reason for a doctors visit worldwide. Many of these patients are advised for surgery during the course of their illness. In fact spinal surgery one of the higly abused surgeries. It has been found out that nearly 30% of spine surgery advised are actually not indicated. when you do a surgery in a back pain patient when it is not needed you end up in what is called a failed back surgery syndrome which is a condition where that patient suffers from more pain much more pain than before surgery. I see a lot of patient in my clinic who come to me saying doc, some surgeon has advised me surgery, what should i do? So I thought of making a video on how to decide when to undergo spine surgery. 95% of back pain patients are fine with just medications, physiotherapy, orthotics, posture correction and other lifestyle changes. And they are just happy with their pain. Those 5% of patients do not get benefit with these modalities. Let me tell you 7 signs that tell you to undergo spine surgery. That means you have an MRI scan which shows some serious issue and you have seen a spine specialist who has advised some kind of spinal interventions. Pain more than 6 months: If you have back pain for more than 6 months and you have pain in spite of medications which you have taken in the last 6 months, probably you have some serious back issue which needs to be addressed. Sciatica pain: Sciatica pain is the pain which comes from your back and spreads to your legs. Similarly your neck pain which spreads to your hands and fingers, you have some serious issue. Severe numbness in your extremities: If you have severe pins and needles sensations in your hands and legs, that means your nerves are really damaged and you need to think about this. And the numbness becomes worse while walking and exertion. Urinary issues: if you have back pain with pain coming to your legs with numbness and you also have difficulty in holding your urine on time, that means your nerves are severely compressed and you need to decide When your pain interferes in your day to day life and work: if you have pain of 8-9 on a scale of 10, during your work hours, you have some serious issue. If you are unable to work during the day time, if you are unable to undertake daily travel or if you are unable to cook or drive, that means your pain has reached the next level and it is severe. If you’re sleepless during night, along with tingling numbness in feet or hands is another red flag in your symptom list, that means your issue is complicated and may go for surgery Limb weakness: Finally if you drop things from hands means you have significant nerve damage. Similarly if you can not grip your slippers while walking, means you have nerve compression.
