The Living Land team attended a ceremony hosted by the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture where outstanding achievements in the field of agriculture were acknowledged. The event also kicked off the Phezukomkono Campaign, which is designed to encourage people to become more active in farming enterprises. We visit two projects that won awards at the ceremony, including the remarkable dairy and mixed farm run by the Delindlala Farmers Cooperative and the Uphuliso Lwethu Youth Project. The Delindlala co-op started out in 2001 when a group of 35 members bought a farm through the LRAD programme. They received financial assistance from a USAID grant to improve the infrastructure. Along with the dairy, they produce meat, vegetables and even some wool. The Uphuliso Lwethu Youth project started out in 2006, when a group of unemployed youths decided to take a leap of faith and start a farming project. They saw a gap in the market for the production of seedlings. They approached various agencies for financial and technical support. The Department of Agriculture helped them to get funding and technical support from various stakeholder partners. Today they produce no less than two million seedlings a year!
