They were developed as a safer alternative to hexachloroethane (HC) smoke grenades, which are more toxic due to their production of zinc chloride and other harmful byproducts. TPA grenades use a pyrotechnic mixture that includes terephthalic acid, potassium chlorate, magnesium carbonate, and sucrose or as a fuel or binder to generate smoke.
