Level 0 - Drywall is installed Level 1 - also called Fire Tape. All seams are taped, corner bead is installed, screws are spotted Level 2 - Also called Top coat. An even coat of mud is applied to all seams and corner bead. Tool marks are acceptable. Level 3 - Also called Skim coat. Another even coat of mud is applied to all seams, corner bead, angles and screws. The surface is ready for texture if it’s being applied. Level 4 - Also called in our region Smooth coat. Another even coat of mud is applied making sure everything is flat. All joints, angles , screws and corner bead are smooth, free of imperfections and ready for paint. Level 5 - Also called Putty Coat. A thin even layer of mud is applied to the entire surface covering all drywall. This creates an even flawless finish perfect for high gloss paints, areas with critical lighting, or for the client wanting a perfect finish. Of course as with drywall there are many ways to get to the desired level. We use automatic taping tools, boxes and hand work. Some do all the work by hand, some use semi auto tools. We all know it’s the finish that counts, not how you get there!
