Christmas Karma – Gurinder Chadha’s new film inspired by Dickens and It’s A Wonderful Life

#ChristmasKarma #kunalnayyar #gurinderchadha CHRISTMAS KARMA is a fun, funny and entertaining festive offering from one of the world's most popular film directors – Gurinder Chadha. Based on the classic British novelist Charles Dickens' ‘A Christmas Carol’, Chadha sets the story in contemporary London with Kunal Nayyar (‘Big Bang Theory’) playing Mr Sood, a rather curmudgeonly, stingy Ugandan Asian – the Scrooge character in this film. Chadha makes Mr Sood a Ugandan refugee – fleeing as a child, the tyrant Idi Amin who famously expelled all South Asians from Uganda in 1972. Many found refuge in Britain – some went to the US and a small number went to India, if they could. Chadha reminds us that just as refugees in Britain (today) find hostility, racism and protests - so too did many East African refugees forced out of their home and having to abandon their businesses – though now many are well-settled, successful and a cohort who had entrepreneurial skills, have gone onto become millionaires and billionaires in the UK. This is a fun film at heart with a star-studded cast and the musical element is strong with genre-defying musician-composer Nitin Sawhney and pop star and impresario Gary Barlow working together. Among the star cast are US icons, Eva Longoria & Billy Porter, and there is also Boy George and a mass of British stars, including Chaithra Chandran ('Bridgerton), Hugh Boneville, best known for ‘Downton Abbey’ (2017) and ‘Eastenders’ soap icon Danny Dyer and British music stars Pixie Lott and Leo Suter.
