Chasing the Orange Glow: Whitprogress Enters the Tyne — A Winter Drone Story

The last light of the winter evening was fading over Tynemouth when I noticed something unusual on the horizon — a bright orange glow drifting slowly toward the mouth of the Tyne. Against the deepening blue of the night sky, it looked almost otherworldly. Curiosity won instantly. I launched the DJI Air 3S and skimmed low across the black water, heading straight toward the glowing apparition. As the drone drew closer, the shape revealed itself: Whitprogress, a small coastal tanker built for short‑range cargo and fuel transport. Her orange deck lights cut through the darkness like a floating ember, guiding her steadily toward the river entrance. Despite the cold biting at my fingers, it was a perfect moment — the kind of capture you only get when you’re in the right place at the right time, and willing to freeze for it. Before heading home, I squeezed in a quick (and slightly jerky!) circuit around Collingwood Monument. Standing guard over the Tyne since 1845, the monument honours Admiral Lord Collingwood — Nelson’s second‑in‑command at Trafalgar, and a North East hero who fired the first shot of the battle. Seeing it from the air at night added a whole new layer of atmosphere. This video is the second part of my winter evening adventure — the inbound ship that may well have delayed the DFDS ferry in the previous upload. A glowing tanker, a historic monument, and a drone braving the cold… all wrapped into one cinematic night flight. Bevor ich einpackte, machte ich noch eine kurze, etwas ruckelige Runde um das Collingwood Monument, das seit 1845 Admiral Lord Collingwood ehrt, Nelsons Stellvertreter in der Schlacht von Trafalgar. Antes de ir embora, fiz um rápido voo ao redor do Monumento Collingwood, construído em 1845 para homenagear o almirante que serviu ao lado de Nelson na Batalha de Trafalgar. Este vídeo continua minha noite gelada: um tanque brilhante, um monumento histórico e um voo noturno que valeu cada segundo.
