Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about axe throwing. Axe throwing is a form of target striking sport that originated from the lumberjack. The sport shares a lot of similarities with archery except that there are axes instead of arrows. The objective for each participant is to throw the axe at the target circular board. Circular board is made of wood with (five) 4 inch wide color-coded concentric circles is used as the target. The distance between the throwing line and target is either 21ft or ranges between 15 to 30 ft. Participants are awarded points for each throw based on where the axe falls on the target board. It is not allowed for the thrower to step past the target line before the axe makes contact with the target. The point where the axe touches on the outermost ring is used for awarding points. In case the axe hits the outermost circle, the participant is awarded one point followed by two, three, and four points for the subsequent inner circles. If a participant hits the bull’s eye five points are awarded. Every participant has given five chances to throw. In case the thrower misses the target altogether, the throw is disqualified and zero points are awarded.
