Chongqing is located southeast of China at the confluence of Yangtze River and Jialing River. It is a mountainous city with a history of over 3,000 years. As China’s fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin, Chongqing has maintained rapid economic development while preserving a wonderful natural environment. It has a wavy terrain and encompasses a wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests, and abundant flora and fauna. The city attracts visitors from home and abroad for its natural wonders and cultural heritage. Chongqing boasts a great number of historic sites, unique architecture, and stunning views. During the ancient times, Chongqing was known as Jiangzhou, Yuzhou, and Gongzhou. Since the Qin Dynasty (221 - 207BC), many dynasties have set up administrative institutions that have endowed the city with brilliant cultures. Perched beside the Yangtze, Chongqing symbolizes Yangtze River civilizations and is the cradle of the Bayu Culture. Past forward to 2020, Chongqing surpassed Shanghai as China's largest municipality by urban population; as of 2023, it had an urban population of 22.87 million. The city also served as the wartime capital for the Republic of China (ROC) during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). Jiefangbei is the People's Liberation Monument at the centre of the CBD. Around this landmark are lined with skyscrapers and up-market shopping malls where you can purchase the most fashionable clothes and ornaments. If you are interested in delicious food, the tasty local snacks on the street will definitely attract your attention. Taking the Yangtze River Cableway over the river is the list of things to do in Chongqing. It connects the Yuzhong District with the Nanan District, stretching 1,166 meters. With a running speed of 6 meters per second, it takes 5 minutes for a single trip. Along the way, you will see the beautiful skyline of Chongqing with the running river under your feet and high-rise buildings by the riversides. You will be immersed in the romance of this city when the night falls and the colorful lightings of the buildings are turned on. Ciqikou Ancient Town was built along the Ma’an Mountain during the Song Dynasty. It has a long history with one third of it well-preserved. It also used to be the North Gate of Chongqing and a bustling water transport terminal of the Jialing River. This old town houses many tourist attractions, including the Stilted Building Square with a charming night view, the ancient Baolun Temple, Yinglong Gate for viewing the river scenery, and the Mahua Museum which is themed on Mahua, fried dough twists. The architecture of the houses has black tiles, brown eaves, white windows, and blue stone walls. The Two Rivers Night Cruise offers a perfect way to experience its unparalleled night scene. As the cruise boat gently departs from Chaotianmen dock, you will enter into a breathtaking world with the glow of neon lights from both banks of the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers, the thousands of lanterns at Hongya Cave, the rainbow lights of Qiansimen Bridge, and other stunning skylines. Besides night sightseeing, some luxurious cruise ships offer snacks and dinner, local shows onboard, such as Sichuan face-changing opera and long-spout teapot tea art. Hongya Cave has a history of more than 2,300 years. It was a large-scale stilt house complex served as military fortress in the past. It was built along a waterfront cliff beside the Yangtze River. Now, it has been a very popular historical sight for tourists to experience a kind of Chinese ethnic culture, Bayu Culture. The whole complex is composed of four cultural streets: Zhiyanhe Bar Street full of nice bars, Tianchengxiang Bayu Culture Street with traditional buildings and delicate handcrafts, Banquet Food Street rife with both local foods and foreign dishes, and the Exotic Balcony Street with some cafes and exotic restaurants. One of the easy and relaxing things to do in Chongqing is to enjoy the splendid night view of the Hongya Cave. Shibati (literary translates as ‘Eighteen Steps’) was once a consulate area and a key link between Chongqing’s upper city and lower city. The steep, winding stone steps connected the city’s commercial center to the riverbank below, lined with vendors, craftsmen, and everyday Chongqing residents going about their routines. There were lots of people, lots of shops, and plenty of small alleyways branching off from the main staircase. In 2015, large parts of Shibati were demolished, leaving ruins behind, but it’s recently been revitalized into a pedestrian-friendly district that blends old and new. As you walk your way down the upper half of the city, you’ll find a few cultural sites, including a historic bell tower, the ruins of an old hospital/elementary school and the area used to be what it look like before parts of it were demolished.
