The first counter system you'd want to start learning is 1 - 一つ (hitotsu) 2 - 二つ (futatsu) 3 - 三つ (mittsu) 4 - 四つ (yottsu) 5 - 五つ (itsutsu) 6 - 六つ (muttsu) 7 - 七つ (nanatsu) 8 - 八つ (yattsu) 9 - 九つ (kokonotsu) 10 - 十 (tou) This counter system is considered the universal counter. You can use it almost all things except money, time and people. So, if you forget which counter to use, it's safe to use these numbers! For long, thin objects (such as umbrellas, bottles) you would use these counters: 1 - 一本 (ippon*) 2 - 二本 (nihon) 3 - 三本 (sanbon*) 4 - 四本 (yonhon) 5 - 五本 (gohon) 6 - 六本 (roppon*) 7 - 七本 (nanahon or shichihon) 8 - 八本 (hachihon or happon*) 9 - 九本 (kyuuhon) 10 - 十本 (juuppon*) Notice the changes to "pon" or "bon" on the ones marked with a *. For dishes served on plates, you'd use the ending "sara": 1 - 一皿 (hitosara) 2 - 二皿 (futasara) 3 - 三皿 (sansara) 4 - 四皿 (yonsara) 5 - 五皿 (gosara) 6 - 六皿 (rokusara) 7 - 七皿 (nanasara) 8 - 八皿 (hachisara) 9 - 九皿 (kyuusara) 10 - 十皿 (juusara) Counters for sushi: 1 - 一貫 (ikkan) 2 - ニ貫 (nikan) 3 - 三貫 (sankan) 4 - 四貫 (yonkan) 5 - 五貫 (gokan) To count liquid in cups, glasses and bowls, you'd use this following counters: 1 - 一杯 (ippai) 2 - 二杯 (nihai) 3 - 三杯 (sanbai*) 4 - 四杯 (yonhai) 5 - 五杯 (gohai) 6 - 六杯 (roppai*) 7 - 七杯 (nanahai) 8 - 八杯 (happai*) 9 - 九杯 (kyuuhai) 10 - 十杯 (juppai*) _____________________ Coto Japanese Academy is a Japanese language school in Tokyo, Japan.
