The Roppener Tunnel is a dual-tube road tunnel located on the Inntal Autobahn A12 in the Tyrolean Oberland region of Austria. The tunnel measures 5,095 meters (north tube) and 5,079 meters (south tube) in length. The tunnel passes under the steep southern slope of Mount Tschirgant, with a maximum mountain overlay of approximately 500 meters. It serves as a bypass for the narrow Imst Gorge and provides relief for the municipalities of Karrösten, Karres, and Roppen. Since the opening of the first tube in 1990, there have been numerous issues and accidents associated with this tunnel, often leading to traffic jams. Construction of the second (southern) tunnel tube began in July 2006. It was opened for traffic on September 23, 2009. The existing tube was renovated and upgraded to meet new safety standards by the end of 2010. Both tubes were officially opened to traffic on December 17, 2010. In 2011, an average of 19,212 motor vehicles passed through the tunnel daily, with approximately 23% of them being trucks. For oversized transports with a width exceeding 3.26 meters, the Tunnel Control Center in St. Jakob am Arlberg must close the tunnel. The tunnel has a height restriction of 4.50 meters. The tunnel is managed by ASFINAG Alpenstraßen GmbH. In the event of tunnel closure, traffic is redirected via the B171 Tiroler Straße. Thanks for watching!
