About 3,000 nationalists demonstrate in Kiev

(14 Oct 2014) Around 3,000 Ukrainian nationalists marched through Kiev city centre on Tuesday, marking both a Christian holiday, and the founding of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Earlier on Tuesday, clashes broke out between demonstrators and police in front of Ukraine's parliament in Kiev as deputies inside repeatedly voted down proposals to recognise the contentious World War II-era Ukrainian partisan group as national heroes. Masked men threw smoke bombs at police outside the parliament building as lawmakers met inside. The Ukrainian Interior Ministry said 36 people were detained by police. Russian president Vladimir Putin criticised the demonstrations earlier on Tuesday, calling the UPA "a nationalist pro-fascist organisation." However, thousands of demonstrators participated in the march, expressing their support for the UPA. "We have come here to commemorate UPA soldiers and to support those who give their lives when fighting for a better destiny of Ukraine," said one activist. October 14 also marks the Christian holiday feast of the Protecting Veil (Intercession) of the Mother of God, widely celebrated in Russia and Ukraine.
