Today I want to talk a little bit about release. A lot has been said about release, lots been posted, a lot of questions are always thrown out on different video sites about what is a good release, what's the proper release and I think the issue comes in there are different types of releases and whether you're a beginner, intermediate, professional. There are different releases for different shots, there are different learning curves on what I'm trying to accomplish when I'm releasing the club, whether I'm a beginner, intermediate, professional. Even to the extent where the professionals, most good players to that level aren't trying to release the club at all through impact. They're trying to hold the club. They don't want it to release. So, what I want to talk about is kind of the three stages of release and why we have to go through these three stages to understand what a true release and how to release the club in golf. The third stage to building a release is more of a not releasing the club. The better players, the low single digits and especially the tour players. I'm not wanting my forearms to rotate through impact because that can go from an open club face to a closed club face very quickly, so what actually happens is there really isn't a lot of rotation in the forearms but the body is rotating the club face square so at this point where I'm halfway down you can see the club face is pointing out where the camera is but as I rotate my body the club face squares up and if I continue to rotate my body the toe of the club passes, my right hand gets on top but really, I didn't do anything with my forearms. After the first stage where we learned that the handle down to handle down and the second part where I get it on plane but now I'm rotating the forearms that just gets me out of that fade or the slice or the pulling of the arms going through. For the better player I want to feel the body square the club face up. I've already got the club face in a good position at the top, half way down the club face is basically square to the arch that I'm swinging it on and now my core or my center rotates and that's what's squaring up the club face. Now, the club head still needs to get down to the ground so there is the hinge at the top of the swing and as I'm starting down I need to unhinge my hands and that's just the weight of the club being pulled down to the ground centrifugal force is kind of throwing it out away from me and if my body keeps moving the weight of the club will get down to the ground but if my body keeps moving the club won't pass the hands. So, there's three stages to this release. The beginning, getting it to hinge, unhinge, rehinge up with the handle low. The second stage is a rotation of the forearms so that the club can be on plane and then the third step is once I got the club face basically on plane and square to the arch the body is what squares the club face up. From there, there is some miscommunication and some confusion because there's a lot of different releases too. Do I want to hit it high, do I want to hit it low, do I want to hit it cut, do I want to hit a draw, so there's a lot of little pieces in there that everybody's got to figure out on their own or go see a good instructor and they can talk to you about different ball flight, different releases, but ultimately, we're looking for not using the hands and the forearms through impact. I want to use my body to square up the club face. That's a true release and that's what we're looking for in the long term.
