NASA's Cassini mission to Saturn and its moons (1997-2017) is one of the most astonishing scientific achievements of humanity in the modern age. The cameras on Cassini captured visually stunning sequences of Saturn, its beautiful rings and each of its remarkable moons. This is no mere chance, since the Cassini imaging team was expertly led with a fine eye by Dr. Carolyn Porco, a supremely talented protégé of none other than Prof. Carl Sagan himself. I have animated the public domain calibrated imaging datasets from the Cassini mission into moving pictures and set the result to a stellar music track by Brian Eno. At a total mission cost of $4 Billion, NASA's footage of Saturn shot by the Cassini mission is one of the most expensive "movies" ever produced! This imaging sequence consists of footage taken by Cassini's Narrow Angle Camera. Remarkably, the looping music by Brian Eno mostly matches the footage in a synergetic rhythm with minimal editing. To be honest, I really don't expect anyone to watch ALL the nearly 7.5 hours of footage straight through in sequence. But jumping about at random always seems to reveal interesting vistas! Please leave a comment below with a timestamp if you encounter a particularly memorable sequence. Some notes on my editing process: -I used 255,978 1024x1024 sized Cassini ISS WAC and NAC raw image frames to animate the initial movies at 24 FPS. -I applied the "Noir" filter to the footage in iMovie. -The initial render was slowed down to 25%, enabling even fleeting moments to be observable. -The end result for the NAC imagery was converted to a 8.5 GB mp4 high definition video file in a square aspect and then uploaded to YouTube.
