To the east of Alva and northwest of Enid is an odd place where little to no vegetation can grow. The picturesque prairie tableland of north-central Oklahoma gives way to salt plains, an area where there is high surface and subsurface salinity, which makes the area generally barren, with few plants and animals. There is enough flora and fauna around the salt areas to justify a wildlife refuge, however.
