This year at Sundance, we explored the state of freedom of expression in an era of heightened government censorship. As storytellers face mounting pressure from all sides, how can we still tell bold or challenging stories? Who decides which stories get told? We brought together filmmakers and policy experts who are all pushing back on attacks to our First Amendment rights and our ability to tell stories about our communities. Panelists discussed a police raid on a Kansas newspaper, book bans in Utah, the impacts of government censorship on filmmakers, and how we can foster creativity and self-expression. Moderated by Carrie Lozano, president and CEO of Independent Television Service, this panel hosted in partnership with the 2026 Sundance Film Festival features Sharon Liese, director and producer of the documentary Seized; Abby Cook, staff attorney at the ACLU of Utah; Carlos López Estrada, filmmaker and founder of Antigravity Academy; and Julie Christeas, founder and CEO of Tandem Pictures and producer of the film Run Amok.
