http://Rousseau.SHP.media Very little is known about Thomas Thorley who published and quite possibly performed church and popular music from around the 1770s until the early 1800s in England. One of the earliest advertisements for his music in 1779 - "a favourite Musical Work, call'd the PILGRIM; containing a variety of English and Scotch songs, elegies, pastorals, cantatas, &c, adapted for the voice, harpsichord and lute" - identified him as Thomas Thorley of Stowmarket, Suffolk. It went on to say that most of these songs had already been performed at Vauxhall (in London) "with peculiar applause". The collection could be bought for five shillings from sellers in Ipswich, Colchester, and Bury, and from the author himself in Stowmarket. A volume of easy organ voluntaries was advertised around 1780 and the publication itself states that these had already been performed in Norwich Cathedral. Thorley was never organist of Norwich but he probably had friends and connections there. We do not know if Thorley earned his living from music or whether he was an amateur gentleman of private means. In any case, along with many jobbing musicians of the day, he wrote popular songs and pieces to be performed at the pleasure gardens of London and at other fashionable venues, such as Bath. One of these, published around 1803, was entitled "'Tis not the distant seas can part" and was advertised a being a particular favourite sung by Mr Pottier at Bath.
