Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi is the first black recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist prize back in 1989. She emerged as a symbol of resilience and political awakening. In 1991, Mmakgabo's journey took her to Sweden, however her works disappeared without a trace. It is these very artworks which will be exhibited for the first time at the UJ gallery, having been recently discovered in Sweden. Ntlo E Tsamayang (The Walking House) serves as a celebration of Indigenous Knowledge systems, confronting themes of self-positioning, power, responsibility, and healing. The exhibition is currently on and runs until the 17th May 2024 at the UJ Art Gallery. This morning we're joined by Mme Helen Sebidi and exhibition co-curator Gabriel Baard.
