Berea, Ohio -- The below is a narrative from the officer's report, it has been edited for clarity and publication. "On January 5th, 2024, at approximately 0149 hours, I was parked at 871 N. Rocky River Dr. (Sunoco) observing traffic when a black Chevrolet Cobalt (OH: KAY9947) came into the city off SR 237 South at a high rate of speed. Even though I was parked close to the lighted roadway with my headlights on, the operator (later identified as Edward D. Nicholson III) did not appear to see me at all. He then traveled straight from the left turn lane and continued south on N. Rocky River Dr. at approximately 60mph, according to my in-car radar. I suspected the operator may be impaired and began trying to catch up to read the license plate and initiate a traffic stop. Ptl. 1627 also happened to be traveling southbound on N. Rocky River Dr. ahead of our position. The Cobalt quickly approached Ptl. 1627's position and had to brake hard. It then began entering the center turn lane as if to pass Ptl. 1627. I activated my overhead lights and the vehicle accelerated, passing Ptl. 1627. I advised dispatch that Ptl. 1627 and I were in pursuit of the vehicle. The vehicle continued south on N. Rocky River Dr. and east on W. Bagley Rd. On Bagley Rd., it reached speeds of approximately 70-75mph, ran red lights, and weaved in and out of traffic. It attempted to turn onto I-71 North, but Ptl. 1627 was in his way. He continued east on Bagley Rd. In front of the Middleburg Hts. Police Dept., the vehicle slowed to approximately 25mph in a 5-lane roadway with no other vehicles around. I authorized Ptl. 1627 to use a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) in order to prevent the vehicle from creating a greater threat to the public by reaching a highway or higher traffic area, especially if impaired. The PIT was successful, and the vehicle came to a stop directly in front of Middleburg Hts. Police Dept. Edward exited without placing the vehicle in park. It rolled into a Middleburg Hts. cruiser, causing minor damage. When the Middleburg Hts. officer moved his cruiser to aid us in placing Edward in custody, the vehicle rolled across the street. When Edward exited, he was reaching his hands in his waistband and disobeyed all commands we gave him. We attempted to gain control of him in order to take him into custody, but he stated, "I can't die!" and attempted to punch us. He kept repeating this statement. I ducked and picked up his legs, causing him to fall onto his back. He continually attempted to break our grasps and refused to place his hands behind his back. He turned to his stomach and continued to resist. I noticed he was clutching a bag of pills in his hand. He pulled his arm under his torso and reached toward his waistband multiple times. Fearing he was trying to access a weapon, I struck him once in his right ribs with my left knee, but it had no effect. Ptl. [MHPD 1] of Middleburg Hts. used empty-handed strikes to Edward's face in an attempt to gain compliance, but it also had no effect. Edward's apparent lack of ability to feel pain, as well as his continual illogical statements, indicated he was under the influence of a dissociative narcotic. Additional Middleburg Hts. officers arrived to assist, and we were able to finally handcuff Edward. Upon searching his person, no weapons were found, but he did have $3,417 in his pocket, in addition to the pills he had been grasping in his hand. When Edward was resisting, he mumbled his name out loud, which came as somewhat of a shock since we had been looking for him earlier in the day. I had looked at his BMV photo earlier in the day but did not recognize him immediately. When asked, Edward provided the name of Terrel Bates. I compared the BMV photographs of each and observed I positively had Edward in custody. I later found Edward's ID in his phone case as well. Upon getting Edward in custody, Ptl. [MHPD 1] immediately called an ambulance to the scene to evaluate Edward's facial injuries. They determined he did not need to be transported to the hospital. Due to his state of mind and behavior, Ptl. 1627 transported Edward directly to N. Royalton Jail. I photographed his injuries prior to departure. Southwest Dispatch contacted the Cleveland Police Dept. who advised Edward had just stolen the vehicle from their city. CPD advised Edward had punched the owner of the vehicle in the face, pushed her out of it, and driven away. Due to it occurring such a short amount of time before our pursuit, CPD had not yet entered charges on Edward or entered the vehicle into LEADS as stolen." ⚠️ Footage from this video was obtained via the Ohio Public Records Act (R.C. 149.43) All persons featured on the channel are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
