It is an Indian cultural heritage gem. The great sanchi stupa located at Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh is one of the oldest stone structures in India. It was originally commissioned by King Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE and 4 ornamental gateways called toranas were added to it in the 1st century BCE. The Sanchi Stupa is the first place in the world to have torana architecture. Today, you can see these toranas in the Jain temples of Rajasthan, in the temples of Warangal and even in China, Korea and Japan. This UNESCO world heritage site also happens to be one of the best protected Buddhist monuments in India. Its history is so rich that the Indian government has depicted it on the back side of the 200 rupee Indian currency note.
