The relation between democracy and expert knowledge appears to be under pressure. Democracy builds on an assumption of equality. But does this justify a rejection of the authority of expertise? How can democratic societies integrate the knowledge of experts without becoming technocratic? This talk discusses one popular model – the “marketplace of ideas” – and exposes its deficits, to then suggest another model – an “infrastructure” model – for how expert knowledge can be sustainably integrated into democratic decision-making, without undermining democratic values. About the speaker: Lisa Herzog is Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Groningen. She is also Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for Philosophy, Politics and Economics. 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:03:17 - The Challenge of Expertise in a Democracy & Political Epistemology 00:10:25 - Knowledge, Institutions, and the Market Model & The Marketplace of Ideas: Origins and Problems 00:21:55 - The Marketplace of Ideas: Detailed Analysis (including Metaphor Introduction, Historical Sources, and Philosophical Critique) 00:37:52 - Historical Context vs. Current Interpretation & Social Media and Democracy 01:00:03 - Social Media, Democracy's Defense and Social Cohesion 01:02:27 - Q&A: Power Dynamics, Role of Experts & Epistocracy vs. Democracy 01:11:53 - Q&A: Regulation of Social Media & Strengthening Democracy and Discourse Rules 01:20:06 - Q&A: Inclusive Deliberation, Information Overload and Societal Trends & The Nature of Unbiased Truth
